Rioja

Bekendste herkomstgebied in Spanje voor hoofdzakelijk rode wijn. Samen met Priorat is Rioja de enige Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa), waarvoor strengere regels gelden dan voor een ‘gewone’ DO. Rioja strekt zich uit langs de oevers van de Ebro en is onderverdeeld in drie zones: Rioja Baja, Rioja Alta en Rioja Alavesa. De twee laatste zijn doorgaans kwalitatief de beste, vanwege hun wat gematigder klimaat. Belangrijkste druif van Rioja is de tempranillo, die zich bijzonder goed leent voor opvoeding op hout. Bedrijven hebben soms wel duizenden vaten tegelijk in hun kelders. Afhankelijk van de opvoedingsduur komen de wijnen op markt als crianza, reserva of gran reserva.
